Our approach to supporting families is based on partnership, communication and trust. We will guide you through every step of your journey, taking the time to listen to your concerns, answer all your questions and provide you with the information you need to make the best decisions for you and your baby.
Our aim is to provide a personalised approach that minimises those natural feelings of apprehension and stress, allowing you to relax and celebrate the special experience of being pregnant. This expert prenatal care is also crucial to the health and wellbeing of your unborn child.
Dr Sabary takes on privately insured patients as well as self-funded patients. He delivers at the St John of God Hospital, just across the road from the consulting rooms.
When should I book my first appointment and what should I expect?
We generally recommend you book your first appointment so that you can visit us around the time you are 7 to 8 weeks pregnant.
During this initial appointment, Dr Sabary will meet with you to:
Conduct an ultrasound dating scan
Review your medical history and screening test options
Discuss the different birth choices you have
Explore the choices in helpful maternal programs available to you
In the lead up to your first appointment, take the time to write down all the questions you have. We will make plenty of time to listen and answer them for you so that you are clear and confident about how best to approach your pregnancy.
During this appointment, Dr Sabary will review your previous test results with you and take as much time as is needed to answer any follow-up questions and concerns you may have. At this time, he will also discuss with you any further tests you may require and the mode of delivery.

When is my second ultrasound?
You will have another ultrasound at around 20 weeks. We will provide. you the details and a referral for this scan.
This scan will allow Dr Sabary and our midwife to check the anatomy and position of your baby, the position of the placenta and the length of the cervix.
From this point, visits will take place every 4 weeks until 28 weeks and then every 2 weeks until you are 36 weeks. After 36 weeks Dr Sabary and the team will see you weekly where you will have a Cardiotocography (CTG) that measures your baby’s heartbeat.
CTG is an additional feature that we offer all of our maternity patients. This is done in the comfort of our rooms with our experienced team. Note, not all obstetricians will offer this service.
Did you know we have a CTG service in our rooms?
Cardiotocography, or CTG, is a medical test used to monitor a baby’s heart rate and uterine contractions, helping assess the baby's well-being during pregnancy and labour.
Patients find this service very convenient. If at any time during your pregnancy you have a concern, including decreased movements, you can come straight in and start using the CTG machine. This helps to see how your baby is and allows Dr Sabary to monitor you and your baby right here.
Not all obstetricians offer this service, so check to make sure it’s on offer when deciding what’s right for you.
Frequently asked questions:
-
An obstetrician is a medically trained doctor who specialises in caring for people during preconception, pregnancy and childbirth, and in diagnosing and treating complications that can arise during this time. A gynaecologist is also a medically trained doctor but they specialise in the female reproductive system. It is not uncommon to come across people who specialise in both fields; this is known as obstetrics and gynaecology or Ob/Gyn for short.

There are three very simple steps you can take to ensure you are giving your growing unborn child the very best start:
Eat well – Eat plenty of nutritious food rich in iodine, folate, iron, protein, calcium and vitamins D and B12. They are the fuel for a healthy pregnancy
Stay active – Try for 30 to 60 minutes of moderate low strenuous activity (walking, swimming etc) per day with the aim to make your heart beat faster.
Ask for support – Everyone’s pregnancy journey is unique so don’t be afraid to lean on your partner, friend, family members or healthcare professionals for support.
-
Pregnancy is a very complex process and whilst there are many things you can do to help it go well, there are also things that we know can put you and your unborn child at risk. To this end we strongly recommend that you don’t smoke, drink alcohol or take any illegal drugs. We also suggest where possible that you limit or stop your intake of high-fat and sugary foods, raw and unpasteurised foods and soft drinks.
Maternal assisted caesarean section.
A maternal assisted c/section is a procedure that allows the birthing mother to remove her baby from her uterus while under a spinal anaesthetic, allowing for intimate bonding between a mother and baby within seconds of the birth.
Dr Sabary was the first Geelong based obstetrician to provide this service at St John of God Geelong Hospital in 2020.
If this is something you would like to consider during your birth, let Dr Sabary know during your visits.
